Kelsey Moore, the UTEP volleyball player who was crowned Miss Texas USA 2010, sits down with El Paso Media Group to talk pageants, Texas and game day.
You didn't grow up in the pageant circuit. Why did you decide to go into pageants now? I’ve always known that I wanted to play volleyball professionally, and when I’m done with volleyball I want to pursue a career as a political reporter. A friend of the family that’s in the sports and entertainment business suggested I start getting used to public speaking and also get my name out there. That’s how this came about, I signed up for the Miss El Paso pageant for the experience.
As a student athlete, how do you think you will set yourself apart from other contestants nationally? I’ve been competing my whole life, but being an athlete I have a very different perspective of competition from the rest of the women I’ll be up against in the Miss USA pageant. Athletics teaches you to understand responsibility, organization and discipline as well as self-awareness, and I believe that will be to my advantage.
On the same topic, how do you think your athleticism and your role as a student leader and athlete has helped you for the Miss Texas USA contest? I’ve learned that being a Division I volleyball player requires a lot of discipline and time management and that has definitely been very helpful. We have a lot on our plates as student-athletes, but one of the things I’ve learned is to focus on whatever task I am doing at that particular moment. Additionally, working out has been part of my routine for as long as I can remember and that’s come in handy with the pageants. I have a lot to learn, but workouts are already part of my schedule and not something I have to work on, so I am very thankful for that.
